Three Essentials for Effective 360-Degree Feedback.
"I find 360-degree feedback tools useful and objective
under three conditions. Without all these, some leaders will reject the feedback
or not use it.” Brent Green, Ph.D.
1. Planning — The feedback process must be planned carefully. Feedback must be confidential, and promote people's honest responses.
2. Benchmarking — The feedback should be data-benchmarked. That is, responses should be compared to a data bank of previous leader responses. Leaders listen when they see their responses and ratings objectively compared to thousands of other leaders across industries. Feedback participants are much more likely to "see the light" when such comparisons are laid out, learning "gaps" become evident. This motivates people to improve.
3. Coaching — Within a week or two after 360-degree feedback is requested and delivered (from self, peers, boss, direct reports, and customers), developmental one-on-one coaching must take place as part of an overall leadership development program.
